Chubby Cheerleaders? hm...

There are many discussions about how the media keeps telling us (and showing us) what they consider the perfect body female. Models are a size zero (although that is changing-slowly), skin must look like porcelain, breasts start at the neckline and jut out about a foot, diet pills are flying off the shelves, diet companies are making $ hand over fist delivering food to your house in boxes that do not even need refrigeration...

And then there is how the media portrays men. There have been a plethora of sitcoms on TV where the main female character is the usual cute, tiny, sexy thing and the husband is a big guy. The only popular sitcom where the woman was larger sized was Roseanne and her husband was pretty equal in size... Where is the heavy woman with the buff dude couple out there?

So now this...The Florida Marlins are looking for a few heavy men to be chubby cheerleaders called Manatees... Where is the outrage? Am I the only one pissed off? On the one side you think-"hey, this could be funny-these guys have balls doing that". On the other hand you think "What kind of esteem do these guys have to go out on the field like a bunch of fat clowns to be laughed at while their manteets jiggle?" (click here for the full story).

The Chicago Bulls already have a similar cheerleading squad called the Matadors...

What is your opinion? Is this as f'ed up as I think it is or am I just being sensitive because I've had weight issues since my mid 20s...up and down.. up and down.. presently on the down swing

Well, uh, this is definitely different. I'm not sure what to make of this.

I think this is horrible! I don't think there is a problem with men out there cheering away but why do they have to be called manatees? Why is it that when there are a group of people a little over weight they have to be named something different. Like modeling for example. If there is a model that wears a size 10 she is considered a plus sized model. Why can't she just be called a model? What a way to give someone low self esteem!
